FAQ
Questions about riding a private railcar
- Can I ride a private railcar on Amtrak without chartering the whole car?
- Yes, on some trips. Owners of privately owned vintage cars sometimes sell single seats or rooms, on public trips they run or when a car is moving between cities. This site lists the ones we can find.
- How much does it cost?
- It depends on the car and the trip. Single seats listed on this site start at $150 for a Hudson Valley ride between New York and Albany. Chartering a whole car typically costs from about $2,500 to $10,000 or more per day, according to the American Association of Private Railroad Car Owners.
- What is private varnish?
- Railroad slang for privately owned passenger cars.
- How do I book?
- Click Book on a ride. It takes you to the owner's own booking page. Timeless Trains doesn't sell tickets or take payment.
- Where do these cars run?
- Private cars travel behind regular Amtrak trains and board only at stations Amtrak allows for that trip. Each ride on this site lists its stations.
- How do I hear about new rides on my route?
- Sign up for alerts with your stations or routes, and we'll email you when a matching ride is listed.
- I own a private railcar. How do I list a trip?
- Use the For car owners form. Listing is free.
