How it works

How “Private Varnish” repositioning works

  1. Step 1

    The Relocation Move

When private car owners move their railcars between charter destinations, maintenance facilities, or seasonal hubs, Amtrak attaches the car to the rear of scheduled passenger trains.

  2. Step 2

    Unlocking “Deadhead” Tickets

To offset Amtrak's required mileage and switching charges, owners release unused bedrooms or seats on these “transit legs” to rail enthusiasts and travelers at individual ticket prices.

  3. Step 3

    Board at Amtrak Terminals

You board directly from major passenger hubs like New York's Moynihan Train Hall, Chicago Union Station, or Los Angeles Union Station, enjoying private steward service and historic luxury behind standard scheduled trains.

Why this exists

I was about to board my normal Amtrak train out of New York, up the Hudson Valley. Randomly, serendipitously, I was able to hop on a vintage railcar coupled to the back of it. Before this, I never knew these things existed.

The ride was so meaningful and so beautiful that afterwards I went looking for a place to buy a single leg on one of these cars. There wasn't one.

What I found is that these cars are mainly chartered, at a fairly high price, often tens of thousands of dollars to start. For most people that's out of reach. But the cars are routinely traveling to and from places, and on those moves the owners will sell rides that are more affordable. Maybe still more than a regular Amtrak ticket, but within reach.

So this site puts those moves in one place: every owner, every route, when a car is going from one city to another, and how to get a seat on it.
